1. The Baseline: What a Battlefield Assumed in 1756
Everything that follows is a departure from this starting point, so it is worth being precise about it.
- The weapon. A flintlock smoothbore musket in a heavy calibre — roughly .69 to .75 — with no rear sight on most patterns, because there was nothing useful to aim with. Loading was a fixed sequence of motions performed standing up, in the open.
- The gap between trials and battle. B. P. Hughes, in Firepower (1974), compared peacetime target trials against battalion-sized targets with the casualties actually inflicted in action. The trial results were respectable; the battlefield results were a small fraction of them. Smoke, fouling after a few dozen rounds, misfires, and the universal tendency to fire high account for most of the difference.
- Reliability. Flintlock misfire rates are commonly cited at roughly one shot in six or seven, worse in rain or damp. A wet day could disarm an army.
- Rate of fire. Two to three rounds a minute was normal. Frederick the Great's Prussian infantry was famous for beating that through relentless drill, iron ramrods, and standardised paper cartridges — the reputation Christopher Duffy examines in The Army of Frederick the Great (1974).
- The consequence. If no individual shot can be relied on, the unit becomes the weapon. Hence three-deep lines, elbow-to-elbow spacing, platoon and battalion volleys, and the drill-square culture that produced them. Dispersing men would have destroyed the only thing that made the fire dangerous: its density.
- The bayonet. Decisive mostly as a threat. Ardant du Picq, writing in the 1860s (published as Études sur le combat, 1880), argued from veterans' testimony that two determined lines almost never actually crossed bayonets — one side broke first. Medical returns bear this out: in the American Civil War, bayonet and sabre wounds together account for well under one percent of treated wounds in The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion.
- The killing ground was about a hundred yards deep. Beyond that, musketry was noise. Every formation, every drill manual, and every general's plan was built on that number.
Bloody Hopes' "Cheers to Fritz, and to Hell with Fritz" sits inside this world: a Prussian army whose reputation rested on doing a mechanical thing faster and more calmly than anyone else, under fire.
2. The First Crack: Jäger, Chasseurs, and a Rifle Too Slow to Matter
Rifling was not new in 1756. It was old, well understood, and militarily marginal — for one reason.
- Who used rifles. German Jäger recruited from foresters and gamekeepers, who brought their own hunting Büchsen; Austrian Grenzer and Croat light troops on the Habsburg military frontier; French chasseurs. Men whose civilian trade was already accurate shooting.
- The disqualifying flaw. A tight-fitting ball had to be forced down the rifling, often with a mallet and a greased patch. That meant roughly one shot a minute or worse against the musket's three, and early military rifles carried no bayonet — leaving the rifleman helpless if cavalry or a bayonet charge reached him.
- So the role stayed specialist. Screening the army's front and flanks, holding broken ground and woods, sniping at officers and gun crews. Useful, sometimes decisive locally, never a substitute for the line.
- Terrain accelerated it. North America's forests and the Austrian frontier both rewarded troops who could fight dispersed. The Seven Years' War in America and the American War of Independence gave light infantry a serious institutional foothold in the British and French armies.
- One road not taken. Patrick Ferguson demonstrated a practical breech-loading rifle to the British Army in 1776. It worked; it was never adopted in quantity. Cost, fragility, and institutional conservatism all played a part.
- A myth worth puncturing. The American Revolution was not won by frontier riflemen picking off redcoats from behind trees. After Baron von Steuben's drill programme at Valley Forge in 1778, the Continental line fought European-style, in line, with smoothbore muskets — a point Brent Nosworthy and Paddy Griffith both press. The riflemen mattered at places like Saratoga and Kings Mountain; they did not replace the line.
3. The Napoleonic Synthesis: Skirmish Screen, Column, and Line
The Napoleonic revolution was mostly organisational, not technical. The musket of 1810 was substantially the musket of 1760. What changed was the number of men holding it and how they were arranged.
- Scale first. The levée en masse of 1793 and the conscription systems that followed turned armies of tens of thousands into armies of hundreds of thousands. Formations that required years of parade-ground perfection were no longer practical for every unit.
- Skirmishing became structural. From 1804–05, French line and light battalions carried a dedicated voltigeur company alongside the elite grenadier company. In practice, whole battalions could be pushed forward as tirailleurs. The skirmish screen was no longer a specialist detachment; it was part of the standard battalion.
- Ordre mixte. Napoleon's characteristic arrangement alternated battalions in line — for fire — with battalions in column — for shock and control. Columns were faster to move, easier for conscripts to hold together, and better for morale; lines produced the firepower.
- The column-versus-line debate has moved. Sir Charles Oman's older thesis, that the British line simply out-shot the French column every time, has been substantially revised by Rory Muir (Tactics and the Experience of Battle in the Age of Napoleon, 1998) and Brent Nosworthy (With Musket, Cannon and Sword, 1996). Many French columns intended to deploy into line and were caught mid-manoeuvre; outcomes turned as much on the skirmish screen, artillery preparation, ground, and morale as on formation geometry.
- Handle one famous quotation with care. Wellington's supposed line about the French coming on "in the same old style" is not securely documented in his own words. It is a good summary of a nineteenth-century interpretation, not evidence for it.
"That Austerlitz Sun" and "For a Better World — The Leipzig Watch" both sit in this period, at opposite ends of it: the system at its most effective, and the same system being ground down by numbers.
4. The British Exception: Riflemen as Doctrine, Not Improvisation
- Institutionalised, not improvised. The Experimental Corps of Riflemen was formed in 1800 and became the 95th Rifles, armed with the Baker rifle — a service weapon, issued to a permanent formation, with its own training and its own green uniform.
- A different kind of soldier. Sir John Moore's light infantry training at Shorncliffe from 1803 deliberately produced men expected to use initiative, judge ground, and fire aimed shots — a break from the drill-automaton model that made the line work.
- The line evolved too. Wellington's two-deep line, combined with the reverse-slope position that hid his infantry from French artillery until the last moment, is the Peninsular signature. It maximised the number of muskets that could actually fire while minimising exposure.
- Anecdote, not evidence. Rifleman Plunket's celebrated long-range killing of the French General Colbert at Cacabelos in 1809 is repeated in every account of the Baker rifle. It is exactly the kind of story that grows in retelling; it illustrates what a rifle could do on a good day, not what rifles typically did.

5. Cavalry in Three Trades
"Cavalry" in this period is not one thing. It is three jobs, with different horses, different men, and different weapons.
- Heavy — cuirassiers and carabiniers. Big men on big horses, breastplate and back-plate, straight sword. A single-purpose instrument: the knee-to-knee charge, held in reserve for the moment a shaken enemy line could be broken open.
- Line and medium — dragoons. Originally mounted infantry who rode to the fight and dismounted to shoot; by 1800 mostly battle cavalry, but the dismounted tradition never entirely disappeared. This is the ancestor of everything that happens in section 11.
- Light — hussars, chasseurs à cheval, lancers, Cossacks. The army's eyes. Reconnaissance, screening, outposts, raiding communications, and — above all — pursuit. Cavalry rarely destroyed an intact army; it destroyed a beaten one, in the hours after it broke.
- Why the square worked. Formed, unshaken infantry in square, with bayonets outward, was effectively immune to cavalry. Horses will not impale themselves on a hedge of steel. Ney's repeated, unsupported cavalry charges against the Allied squares at Waterloo are the textbook demonstration of what happens when this is ignored.
- The exception that confirms it. At García Hernández in 1812, dragoons of the King's German Legion broke formed French squares — an event historians treat as remarkable precisely because it so rarely happened.
- The working formula. Cavalry beats infantry that artillery, skirmishers, or exhaustion have already broken. Alone, against steady infantry, it loses. That formula holds for the whole period — and then the arithmetic changes when infantry can kill horsemen at three hundred yards.
"The Smile Inside the Square" is set inside exactly this problem, from the infantry's side of it.
6. Artillery Becomes a Manoeuvre Arm
- Standardisation. The Gribeauval system, adopted in France from the 1760s–70s, fixed calibres at 4-, 8-, and 12-pounders, lightened carriages, introduced the elevating screw, and pushed interchangeable parts. Guns became something an army could move and supply, not just emplace.
- Horse artillery. Pioneered by Frederick's Prussians around 1759 and copied everywhere: every gunner mounted, so the battery moves at cavalry pace and can appear where it is not expected.
- Two ranges, two effects. Round shot was effective out to roughly 800–1,000 yards, bouncing through formations along its line of flight. Canister — a tin of musket balls turning the gun into a giant shotgun — was devastating inside about 400 yards. The difference between a bombardment and a massacre was distance.
- Massing as a method. Napoleon, a gunner by training, concentrated batteries — the grand batteries at Wagram in 1809 and Borodino in 1812 — to punch a single hole rather than spread fire along a front.
- Share of the killing. Artillery is commonly estimated to have caused around half of the casualties in major Napoleonic battles. In the American Civil War that share collapses — often put at roughly a tenth of wounds — for a specific reason: infantry with rifle-muskets could shoot the gunners before the guns got close enough to use canister. The gun did not get worse. The infantry got longer arms.
7. The Technical Break, 1807–1855: Cap and Ball
Two separate inventions, half a century apart, did more to change the battlefield than any general in this article.
- The percussion cap. Alexander Forsyth patented percussion ignition in 1807; the copper cap followed in the 1820s. Britain began converting its muskets from 1839; the US Model 1842 was the first regulation American percussion musket. Ignition became fast, weatherproof, and far more reliable than the flint — a change that quietly deleted the "wet powder disarms an army" problem.
- The loading problem. Rifling's obstacle was always the tight ball. Delvigne (1826) and Thouvenin's pillar breech (1844) attacked it; Claude-Étienne Minié's expanding ball (1849) solved it. An undersized cylindro-conical bullet with a hollow base drops easily down a dirty barrel; the propellant gas expands its skirt into the rifling at the moment of firing.
- The result. Rifle accuracy at musket loading speed, with no additional training required to load. The British Enfield P1853 (.577) and the US Springfield M1855/1861 (.58) were sighted for many hundreds of yards. The effective envelope of an ordinary infantryman's weapon expanded roughly threefold.
- Mass production made it universal. The interchangeable-parts machinery developed at Springfield Armory — the "American system of manufacture" — was bought by Britain to re-equip the Enfield works in the 1850s. For the first time, a state could re-arm an entire army within a few years rather than a generation. That is why the change arrives everywhere at once.
- What did not change. The drill manuals. The formations. The assumption that assaults are delivered by dense bodies of men crossing open ground. The next three sections are the bill for that.
8. First Trials: Crimea, 1854, and Italy, 1859
- Crimea gave the rifle its first real test. British troops with Minié and Enfield rifles engaged Russian infantry still largely carrying smoothbores at the Alma and Inkerman in 1854. The range advantage was real and was noticed.
- And the war is remembered for a cavalry charge anyway. The Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava on 25 October 1854 — a mistaken order, a valley covered by artillery on three sides — became the defining image of the war. Disease and exposure killed far more men than the charge did.
- Sevastopol previewed 1864. An eleven-month siege of parallels, saps, and trenches, fought with rifles and heavy guns. Every element of the Petersburg lines is visible there, a decade early.
- Doctrine barely moved. Hew Strachan's work on the British Army between Waterloo and the Crimea makes the point bluntly: tactical thought changed remarkably little across those forty years, despite the weapons changing completely.
- Italy 1859 taught the wrong lesson. At Magenta and Solferino, the French fielded the first rifled field artillery in a major war (the La Hitte system) — and their infantry won by closing fast and using the bayonet against Austrians armed with Lorenz rifles.
- Why that mattered. A shock doctrine had just beaten rifle-armed infantry in front of every observer in Europe. It looked like proof that élan still worked. It was, in fact, a result produced by Austrian command failures and French speed — but the misreading fed straight into French doctrine and helped set up 1870.
"Into the Guns — The Light Brigade" lives in the gap this section describes: a magnificent execution of a tactic the technology had already begun to retire.
9. The American Civil War: The Bill Arrives
- The starting position. Both armies opened the war with rifle-muskets in hand and Napoleonic manuals — Hardee's and Casey's tactics — on the shelf. The weapons were of the 1850s; the doctrine was of the 1790s.
- Fredericksburg, December 1862. Repeated Union brigade assaults across open ground against Confederate infantry behind a stone wall and sunken road at Marye's Heights. No assault reached the wall. It is the cleanest demonstration in the war of a frontal attack meeting prepared infantry with modern rifles.
- Pickett's Charge, 3 July 1863. Roughly 12,500 men crossing about three-quarters of a mile of open ground under artillery and then rifle fire; approximately half became casualties in under an hour, and the assault did not hold what it briefly took.
- Cold Harbor, 3 June 1864. Grant wrote in his Personal Memoirs (1885) that he always regretted ordering the last assault there. It is a rare and explicit admission that the arithmetic of the assault had changed.
- The skirmish line stopped being a screen. By 1863–64, heavy skirmish lines were doing an increasing share of the actual fighting — dispersed, using cover, in numbers that would have been unthinkable as a "detachment" fifty years earlier. This is the single most important tactical continuity between this war and the twentieth century.
- Entrenchment became reflexive. During the Overland Campaign of 1864, troops on both sides dug in within hours of halting, frequently without orders, using bayonets, tin plates, and hands when tools were short. Earl J. Hess documents this shift in detail in Field Armies and Fortifications in the Civil War (2005). The nine-month Petersburg lines (June 1864 – April 1865) were its logical end point.
- Who was doing the killing. The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion records that the overwhelming majority of treated wounds came from small-arms projectiles, with artillery a distant second and edged weapons — bayonet and sabre together — a fraction of one percent.
Four songs sit directly on this ground: "The Elephant" at Manassas, "Surrender, Swim, or Fight" at Shiloh, "He Raised His Hands" at Gettysburg, and "What Mercy Had To Do".
10. The Rifle-Musket Debate: What the Evidence Actually Shows
This is the part of the story where the popular version and the scholarship diverge, and the site's usual rule applies: prefer the claim a sceptic could check.
- The popular version. The rifle-musket tripled effective range, made the frontal assault suicidal, and therefore caused the Civil War's casualty rates. Clean, mechanical, and widely repeated.
- Griffith's challenge. Paddy Griffith, in Battle Tactics of the Civil War (1989), sampled engagements and found typical infantry firefights taking place at ranges close to those of the smoothbore era — on the order of one hundred to one hundred and fifty yards, not five hundred.
- Hess's mechanism. Earl J. Hess, in The Rifle Musket in Civil War Combat: Reality and Myth (2008), explains why: most soldiers received almost no marksmanship training, could not estimate range, and were never taught to compensate for the Minié ball's steeply arcing trajectory. Long-range rifle fire was a skill nobody was systematically taught. The weapon's theoretical envelope went largely unused.
- Nosworthy's middle position. The Bloody Crucible of Courage (2003) finds the change real but uneven — some units, some commanders, and some fights show long-range fire mattering a great deal, others none at all.
- Terrain did some of the work. Much of the war was fought in woods, scrub, and broken farmland where a five-hundred-yard field of fire simply did not exist, whatever the rifle could do.
- The honest conclusion. Casualties rose because of a combination: army size, campaign length, entrenchment, repeated frontal assaults against prepared positions, and — yes — better rifles. The rifle-musket is one variable in that set, not the single cause. Anyone telling you the Minié ball alone explains 1861–65 is telling you a tidier story than the evidence supports.
11. Cavalry Dismounts: Carbines, Repeaters, and Reconnaissance
The clearest tactical transformation of the whole century, and the one that closes the arc opened in section 5.
- The shock charge against formed infantry effectively disappears in America. Cuirassiers had no descendants on that battlefield. Infantry that can kill a horse at three hundred yards does not need to form square.
- New weapons for horsemen. The Sharps breech-loading carbine let a mounted or prone man load quickly; the Spencer repeating carbine, with a seven-round tube magazine, was adopted from 1863 and gave a small dismounted force firepower out of all proportion to its numbers.
- Mounted infantry, explicitly. Colonel John T. Wilder's "Lightning Brigade" — infantry mounted for mobility and armed with Spencers — used the horse purely as transport at Hoover's Gap in June 1863.
- Gettysburg, 1 July 1863. John Buford's cavalry division fought dismounted west of the town, using carbines, terrain, and delay to hold the ridges until Union infantry arrived. This is cavalry as a fire-and-ground arm, not a shock arm — and it decided where the battle would be fought.
- Raiding as strategy. Grierson's Raid (April–May 1863), Stuart's rides, and Sheridan's 1864 operations treated cavalry as an operational instrument aimed at communications, supply, and the enemy's cavalry, rather than as a battlefield hammer.
- But the old role did not vanish overnight. Brandy Station, 9 June 1863 — the largest cavalry engagement ever fought in North America — still involved substantial mounted, sabre-in-hand fighting. Change was directional, not instantaneous.
- The European divergence. Balaclava in 1854 and the continental armies of the 1860s kept the shock tradition alive far longer. The dismounted-carbine model was, at this point, an American answer — and it was the one the twentieth century would adopt.
12. The Same Curve at Sea
A short footnote, because the naval story runs exactly parallel and two songs in the catalogue sit on it.
- Sail to steam. The USS Constitution of 1812 — "Not a Drop of Water" — was a sailing frigate whose tactics Nelson would have recognised. The CSS Alabama of 1862–64 — "Rum, Alabama, Rum!" — was a steam-and-sail commerce raider that could ignore the wind, and was sunk by the USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg on 19 June 1864.
- Armour briefly beat guns. At Hampton Roads on 9 March 1862, the Monitor and the Virginia fought the first battle between ironclads and neither could seriously damage the other. Protection had temporarily outrun the projectile — a race that would reverse within a decade.
- Same lesson, different medium. Propulsion, protection, and rifled guns all changed faster than the men trained to use them could rewrite their tactics.
13. What Was Settled by 1865 — and What Was Not
- Settled: dispersion beats density; cover is not cowardice; field fortification is routine rather than exceptional; the frontal assault against prepared infantry is affordable only in extremity; railways and the telegraph now set the scale and tempo of campaigns.
- Not yet settled — the true breech-loader. Prussia had adopted the Dreyse needle gun in 1841. It let a soldier load lying down, behind cover, at several times the rate of a muzzle-loader, and it produced Königgrätz in 1866 — a year after Appomattox.
- Still to come: steel breech-loading artillery (Krupp, decisive by 1870), reliable metallic cartridges, magazine rifles, smokeless powder from 1884, and the machine gun. Every one of these would push the same trend further in the same direction.
- Why 1861–65 is the watershed. It is the last major war fought in Napoleonic grammar — brigades in line, colours advanced, officers on horseback — and the first fought with industrial output, railway logistics, mass-produced rifles, and trench lines measured in miles. Both things are true of the same battlefield at the same time. That is what makes it the end of the period rather than the start of the next one.
A century of tactics is the story of how long it takes an institution to believe what its own weapons are telling it.
14. The Songs That Sit on This Line
The Bloody Hopes catalogue happens to run along this exact century, and the songs can be read as points on the curve described above. "Cheers to Fritz, and to Hell with Fritz" stands at the drill-square end, where discipline was the technology. "That Austerlitz Sun", "The Lancaster's Brigade Ribbon", "For a Better World — The Leipzig Watch" and "The Smile Inside the Square" cover the Napoleonic system at its height and at its collapse — including, in the last of these, the infantry square doing the one job it existed to do. "Into the Guns — The Light Brigade" is the hinge: a perfectly executed charge in a war that had already begun to make charges obsolete. And "The Elephant", "Surrender, Swim, or Fight", "He Raised His Hands", "What Mercy Had To Do" and "There Will Be Mourning in Farmington" are all set on the far side of the change, where the ground is dug and the arithmetic has turned.
