Historical Context

The narrator belongs to the generation before the Risorgimento’s famous victories. Campo Formio in 1797 ended the old Republic of Venice by treaty and transferred its territories into Habsburg hands, making Napoleon both liberator and betrayer in Italian memory. In the years that followed, French-backed republics gave way to Napoleon’s Kingdom of Italy, and Italian soldiers fought through his campaigns from Marengo and Wagram to the invasion of Russia.

The officer is fictional, but his contradiction is historical: serving a foreign emperor could offer Italians institutions, colours, military experience, and the language of a nation while demanding their blood for wars that were not yet Italy’s own. The unified kingdom promised by the refrain would arrive decades after the frozen retreat that kills him.

A Nation Deferred

“L’Italia si farà” begins as inheritance, becomes justification, and ends as a last breath. The hidden tricolour fades while the narrator wins battles for another sovereign; each new campaign postpones the homecoming until Russia removes horse, fingers, comrades, and finally the body carrying the promise.

The song is therefore not a Garibaldian victory anthem. It is about an earlier, compromised patriotism: a man who cannot yet serve Italy directly, so he spends himself inside Napoleon’s army and leaves the future nation the only thing he still possesses—his final breath.

Lyrics

Al primo figlio, il palazzo,
le terre e il nome avíto.
A me la sciabola e un morello,
e il mondo ancora intatto.

Mia madre, senza piangere,
cucì tre colori nella giubba.
Partii coi tamburi di Francia:
promettevano una patria.

Poi Campoformio: nessuna salva,
soltanto cera, penne e sigilli.
Il Corso comperò la sua pace
con Venezia e casa mia.

Volsi la briglia alla laguna,
ma la vergogna mi chiuse la via.
Tornai dove rullavano i tamburi.

L’Italia si farà.

La Repubblica si cinse d’una corona;
io serrai la sciabola al fianco.
Sotto le tende, a lume basso,
Italia era salmo e bestemmia.

Servivamo un sovrano straniero
per non confessarci servi ancora.
Ogni tomba era un pegno
che mi vietava il ritorno.

«Un’altra campagna», mi dicevo.

L’Italia si farà.

Per quindici anni, all’Italia la sella;
all’Imperatore il sangue e le vittorie.
Da Marengo sino a Wagram
vinsi battaglie non mie.

Poi l’aquila varcò il Niemen
e ci condusse fuori dal mondo.
La neve prese il mio morello,
poi le dita, poi i compagni.

Un’altra campagna.
Un’altra città.

L’Italia si farà.

Trascinai verso occidente una briglia
che guidava soltanto un’ombra.
Nella fodera, il tricolore
s’era fatto pallido e muto.

Nessuna tromba ebbe fiato per me.
Nessuno ruppe il passo.

La colonna seguitò.

Strinsi quel lembo nel pugno:
fu l’ultima mano che ebbi.
Alla neve lasciai il corpo,
all’Italia l’ultimo fiato.

L’Italia si farà.
