Ferdinand Magellan was killed at Mactan on April 27, 1521 after being wounded during the fighting; Antonio Pigafetta's account describes a projectile striking Magellan's leg and further blows from lances and blades, not a securely established death from one poisoned arrow. On June 25, 1876, George Custer's battalion of the Seventh Cavalry was destroyed at the Little Bighorn after the regiment divided against a much larger encampment than its commanders understood. On May 25, 1928, survivors of the airship Italia sheltered on Arctic ice in the Red Tent and transmitted radio calls until they were heard; rescue took weeks, and Roald Amundsen disappeared while participating in the search.
Each event turns on the same failure: a message that needed to travel faster than it could, help that was sent but arrived too late, too far, or not at all.
“Send the Italian” deliberately joins three different Italian roles: Pigafetta preserved the record of Magellan's expedition; Giovanni Martini, later known as John Martin, carried Custer's last surviving message; and radio operator Giuseppe Biagi kept transmitting from the Red Tent. They were not three versions of one historical messenger “sent too late.” That repetition is the ballad's anachronistic device, connecting record, order, and signal after larger plans had already begun to fail.

Pigafetta stepped ashore still writing,
with the dead men in his pen.
“The food was poor,” he noted.
“Remarkable voyage, again.”

Give him paper, give him orders,
give him one good road out in.
He is not retreating,
that is not the case at all.
He is carrying vital news
when the brave men make their fall.
Custer watched the valley moving,
dust and lodges in the heat.
Someone said, “We need the packs, sir.”
Someone said, “We must be quick.”
“Martini, take this note to Benteen.
Ride until the horses foam.”
John folded it inside his jacket
and wisely rode alone.
At dusk the field lay quiet,
and the flags were lying flat.
Martini reached Benteen’s column.
No one sent him back.
Send the Italian with the message,

He is not retreating,
he is moving with dispatch.
History may keep the medals.
He will keep his hat.
Over Arctic ice Italia broke,
red tent in the snow.
Biagi warmed the little radio
and would not let it go.
Frozen hands and fading batteries,
static in the polar night,
he tapped until a stranger heard him
through the crackle and the white.
“Biagi, how did you endure it?”
He said, “The set required care.”
Then he sent another signal.
Someone, somewhere, heard it there.
Send the Italian with the message,
wire, a saddle, ink, or flame.
Empires crack and captains thunder,
but the message still gets through.
He is not retreating.
